Giovanni Cerri è nato nel 1969 a Milano, dove vive e lavora. Ha iniziato a esporre nel 1987 e da allora ha tenuto mostre in Italia e all’estero (Bolivia, Canada, Cina, Croazia, Danimarca, Francia, Germania, Polonia, Romania, Turchia, USA). Da sempre attratto dal territorio urbano di periferia, la sua ricerca si è sviluppata nell’indagine tematica dell’archeologia industriale, con raffigurazioni di fabbriche dismesse, aree abbandonate e relitti di edifici al confine tra città e hinterland. Dal 2001 al 2009, con il ciclo delle «città fantasma», ha lavorato dipingendo sulla carta di quotidiano. Un supporto che – attraverso alcuni frammenti di scritte – raccontava la nostra contemporaneità, come una sorta di cronaca affiorante dalla materia pittorica. Nel 2006, con questa tecnica, ha rivisitato in sedici quadri alcuni celebri volti della Cappella Sistina e del Giudizio Universale di Michelangelo per una mostra alla Galleria Blanchaert di Milano e successivamente è stato invitato dal curatore Philippe Daverio al Premio Michetti a Francavilla al Mare. Nel 2008 espone con il padre Giancarlo al Museo della Permanente a Milano nella mostra «I Cerri, Giancarlo e Giovanni. La pittura di generazione in generazione». Nel 2009 realizza il grande trittico dal titolo «Gomorra, l’altro Eden», ispirato al best-seller di Roberto Saviano. In questi anni, diversi suoi cataloghi sono stati accompagnati dai testi dell’amico scrittore Raul Montanari. Nel 2010 è tornato alla pittura su tela, presentando nell’ambito del Premio «Riprogettare l’archeologia», un altro grande trittico dal titolo «Habitat» alla Triennale Design Museum di Milano. Nel 2011, invitato dal curatore Vittorio Sgarbi, espone al Padiglione Italia Regione Lombardia alla 54° Biennale di Venezia e successivamente alla mostra “Artisti per Noto. L’ombra del divino nell’arte contemporanea” a Palazzo Grimani a Venezia. Nel 2014 il ciclo di opere “The great country” viene esposto all'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Copenaghen, all'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Colonia e al Museo Riva 1920 di Cantù, la mostra è presentata in catalogo da Flaminio Gualdoni. Nel 2015 la mostra “Milano ieri e oggi” viene esposta all’Unione del Commercio a Palazzo Bovara a Milano, alla Cortina Arte a Milano, alla Galleria Palmieri di Busto Arsizio e all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Varsavia. Una sua opera è presente nella collezione del Museo della Permanente a Milano.
