After studying at the Naples Academy of Fine Arts, Salvatore Emblema moved to Rome. His first works were collages made using the moste disparate material that he had collected in and around his native Terzigno, on the slopes of Vesuvius; their unique character would lead to the artist making them the subject of a 1953 film documentary produced for the “Settimana Incom” series of cinema newsreels. In 1956 Emblema held his first solo exhibition with various kinds of materials used as if he were trying to introduce the stuff of real life into his pictures; this was particulary true of his use of sacking , wich he patiently “unwove” with the skill of a craftsman.
