After graduating with a degree in Literature and Humanities, Giulio D’Ercole entered the world of media and creative communication. He commenced his career working in radio, theatre and television as content creator, writer, producer and documentary film director. After nine years as writer producer in a private Television network, he moved, in 1997, from Rome to New York, where he was hired as Senior Producer first by RAI Corporation and then by GlobalVision and Rossellini & Associates. In such capacity, he developed a strong interest in social issues, fine tuning the necessary skills to document them through film-documentaries and photography. In 2003, he moved to Kenya, where, while he was working for UNESCO as Communication and Media Expert, he founded Canvas Africa Productions. With his new multimedia company, he produced a large number of high quality and compelling documentaries and photo reportages on humanitarian projects implemented by the most relevant United Nations Agencies and International Non- Governmental Organizations. Even though he started photographing in his mid-twenties, it was in fact only in the African continent that he began his career as a photographer, specializing mainly on social and anthropological photography. Because of his background in humanistic studies, his personal international experiences and his sense of aesthetics, Giulio D’Ercole is able to combine these matters in the most profound visuals, capturing meaningful and, compelling images of humans around the world. In each one of his social fine art photos there is what Henri Cartier-Bresson called “the Decisive Moment”, that quid that reveals the very soul of Life. His work has been widely appreciated through numerous international exhibitions. In 2007, he held his first photo exhibition in Nairobi, the title of which was “The Face of African Dignity”. The exhibition was hosted both by the American Embassy and by the Italian Institute of Culture. In 2008, the Institute, in 2008 held also the photographer’s second body of work “Life In and Beyond”, a collection of photos shot in Somalia, where he worked as UNESCO communication consultant. The experience in the post-conflict country gave birth also to another photo exhibition, “Impressions from Somalia”, held at Le Rustique Gallery in Nairobi. His deep interest on the interaction between human life, nature, social issues and culture(s) brought him to travel to Northern Kenya, where he photographed several indigenous tribes living in the Turkana region. His fourth exhibition “Life in Lake Turkana”, showcased, in 2010, at the French Cultural Center (Alliance Francaise) in Nairobi, at the Italian Institute of Culture in Nairobi, at the Lagos Photo Festival, and finally, in 2011, at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, in the Italian Pavilion. In the same year, Giulio D’Ercole’s exhibition “Rural African Women – Beauty beyond Ego” was successfully hosted by the Watatu Art Gallery in Nairobi. His last exhibition in Kenya, dates 2013, when a new collection shot during the Lake Turkana Festival, was shown for a full month at the Kenyan National Museum. The year after, in 2014, Giulio D’Ercole went back to Rome, his hometown, where he works as a photographer, documentary filmmaker and communication consultant for multimedia projects. On October 2020, a collection of his street photography shots, portraying various aspects of life in Rome, was shown at the “Museo Fondazione Crocetti”. IT Giulio D’Ercole, dopo una laurea in Lettere, si rivolge al mondo dei media e della comunicazione creativa.
