ALEX RINESCH (*1955 in Vienna) Alex assembles and puts together in his latest series “DREAMT HORIZONS” oil paintings, mixed media and watercolor with various objects found on abandoned beaches. Wooden flotsam and rusty pieces collected from wrecked decaying ships and he invites us to join him on his voyage, navigating beyond the barriers of our imagination. Today the madness/insanity of the world is the barrier – the wall – everything that hinders connection between humans: This very aspiration - to interact, to unite, to relate with each other – constitutes the dreamed horizon by Alex Rinesch. A particular artist whose little boats full of poetry represent peoples’ curiosity, which drives them to explore and to naviagte beyond the horizon. The desire to travel to the beyond, following imagination and intuition towards unknown worlds – towards that very “dreamt horizon” is intensively reflected in his works, which conquer and fascinate us as much as these depictions: The first titled “dreamt horizon” (papyrus, watercolor and incision on plexiglass) and the second with the title “Four Moments” unusual in the usage of metal combined with color on celluloid. They are vivid creations with intense color nuances that not only carry us off to the sea, but that are also able to stimulate our own reflection on problems of great actuality such as walls – constructions that divide instead of unite. After projects of great interest like “coastline connected” - where the coastline is regarded as an element of union not separation – intense research leads the artist towards these works. Works that inspire us for the beyond, which we often perceive as unreachable, unexplored, foreign, strange, diverse – almost as a metaphor of the human limit, of the obstacle to interpersonal relationships, of all the barriers that we could encounter in the course of our lives, the prejudices that we build around us. We cannot not think about the poem of a grand poet – Eugene Montale, Nobel Price for literature, in which the wish to go beyond the appearances is always present. The search continues with an opening towards the essence of things and towards the trust in a miracle that allows us to unveil the truth. In “Ossi di Sepia” (1925; cuttlefish bones) the wall acts as a negative symbol for a state of closure, oppression and imprisonment, whereas the poet seeks those symbols that may allude to the possibility of evasion, escape and liberty – just like the opening. (Text: Dr. Serena Baccaglini) Alex started as backstage artist, doing theater plastic, stage design and paintings, working for several years with André Heller, and Hundertwasser. He illustrated books for the Burgtheater/Vienna, Jerôme Savary, Picus Verlag, ORF and Hachette. As cartoonist he developed his own characters: “Freecheese&Company” has been published worldwide on artprints, posters, cards and books with Verkerke, Hallmark, Mondadori and Biembi until 1999. “ from 2001 with Goebel and Fürhapter. Inspired by the splendid colors of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the global pollution of our oceans his first paintings of the sea from 2007 on were resulting in his installation project “Coastline Connected”. (2011-2016 - Prag, Vienna, Portoferraio, Lugano). Big format coast paintings (oil/canvas) “connected” to a 35m long coastline, installed over a real beach, of sand, gravel, driftwood polluted by plastic flotsam. 2017-2020 latest Exhibitions (“NAVE DI CARTA” , “FORZA 5”, “DREAMT HORIZONS ”, “FIRST SELECTION”) Alex works in Vienna and Italy/Elba island.
